PICKIN’ WINNERS: Wild Card Weekend

[NOTE: Yes, I’m taking a vacation from the site this week, but I still wanted to post my picks for the NFL playoffs. Your regularly scheduled columns will return next week.]

Posting a picks column on a weekday is dangerous. With 32 NFL teams all playing games with injury reports, suspensions and who will start at quarterback, you really need to wait until the last minute to choose wisely. No week is peppered with more question marks than Week 17, when some teams barely even bother to show up. So I revisited my picks on Sunday morning and made a couple of key changes. PICKIN’ WINNERS: Week 17

It’s do-or-die time in Pick ‘Em Pools. Whether you’re protecting a lead over your buddies or trying to make up a few points on Ned from accounting, there are just 16 games left, thus each one is huge. Of course, I’ll keep picking games through the playoffs, but I’m also in a pool that ends at the conclusion of the regular season. So let’s stay focused on Week 17. It’s historically a wild week with plenty of contenders resting for the playoffs, players sitting out with minor injuries and coaches trying out young players. You really have to stay on top of the inactives and the benchings. This week, the teams that have little or nothing to play for are the Patriots, Bears and Eagles. For the only time in the season, all 16 games will be played on Sunday, creating quite a football smorgasbord during the early and afternoon games.

Last week was a bit of a downer for The Geek. I didn’t have a great feel for the games and it showed up in the form of a 7-9 week (missed my Falcons lock too). At least my last-minute move to switch from the Jets to the Bears paid off. If any surprising developments pop up, I reserve the right to change my mind again, but for now, here are my… CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PICKS

PICKIN’ WINNERS: Week 16

With every game played, we learn more about each of the 32 NFL squads. So pickin’ winners should be easier at the end of the season, right? Well, it’s never that easy, but I do believe there’s more information to work with than in the first few weeks, when teams are establishing their identities. With that in mind, the goal in the final weeks is to go out with a bang. It’s not too late to make a charge to the top of the standings in your office pool or to win a little cash at your Vegas casino of choice. I’m off to a good start, based on Week 15. Went 10-6 and hit my lock o’ the week (Falcons). Let’s see if we can’t enjoy another week on the plus side in the… CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PICKS

PICKIN’ WINNERS: Week 15

I’m running a little late, so I’ll keep this brief. Last week was filled with crazy covers. In the Thursday night game, you had the Titans scoring on the last play of the game to cover. Shame on Jeff Fisher for not trying the “field goal/on-side kick/Hail Mary” combo instead of wasting the clock away. On Sunday, the Redskins missed an extra point, which gave the Buccaneers a win, but cost them a shot at a cover in OT. And Sunday night, the Cowboys scored a late TD to cover against the Eagles. Of course, I got all of those games wrong. But there was some salvation in the “real” Monday Night Football game. I switched my pick to the Ravens, and they pulled off an unlikely cover with the rare OT pick-6. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PICKS

PICKIN’ WINNERS: Week 14

We’ve hit the unofficial home stretch of Pick ‘Em Pools, now that NFL teams are hitting the final quarter of their schedule. In my pool, the good news is I’m in eighth place. The bad news is that I’m 11 points behind the leader. So it’s time to put the pedal to the metal and make up some ground. Who’s with me?

Week 13 turned out to be neither lucky nor unlucky for my picks. That’s right, 8-8. Got the lock right though, as the Bears barely covered in Detroit. This week, I actually found many of the games easy to pick. That doesn’t necessarily mean a double-digit-win week is on the way, but it does feel better to have a sense of confidence in my picks instead of wavering. Without further ado (when does anyone ever say “ado” outside of that phrase?!), here are The Geek’s… CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PICKS

PICKIN’ WINNERS: Week 13

Unlucky Week 13. We’ll see about that. Looks like a lot of big home favorites this week. After my first glance at the spreads, I was tempted to take the points in most cases. But upon further review, I went with some of the stronger home teams, minus the points.

Last week, the night games saved me. Had a solid Thanksgiving, going 2-1. Missed the Saints pick by a measly half point. But then again, Roy Williams could’ve iced that game for the Cowboys if he’d have just held onto the ball. I had both road teams on Sunday and Monday night, and both treated their hosts more rudely Cousin Eddy in a Vacation flick. Overall, it was a 9-7 week for The Geek. Good to be back on the plus side. I did miss my lock though. Didn’t buy the Bears resurgence, so I thought the Eagles would fly out of the Windy City with a win. A tip-drill interception in the red zone near the end of the first half swiped all of the Eagles’ momentum and the Bears basically cruised. Though I still have no idea why Andy Reid elected to kick a field goal on fourth-and-goal from the 18 with less than five minutes left when his team was down 15 points. Dude, you need two touchdowns! Dreadful game management. Now that I’m riled up, it’s time to tackle the Week 13 picks. No superstitions here… CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PICKS
